HellcyonKingfisher from Hell! By Lloyd Brown / Good BladesHellcyon are a bunch of fun loving lads from Southampton who are starting to make themselves known on the circuit. I met them at the Talking Heads for an interview, I sat down and watched them sound check with a bottle of 1664 in my hand, instantly impressed by some great drumming and mind bending solo's I drank my beer and then set about interviewing the band.
Good Blades: Firstly how do you pronounce the name?
Hell – see – un, you can see it on our merch t-shirts, if you say it slowly you kind of get it, some people jump at names like helicopter though.
Good Blades: What's the idea behind the band name?
We've been told it means something to do with kingfisher, but it's because of our metal roots and cyon is meant to mean peaceful so we kind of took that and put hell in front of it, but its also meant to mean kingfisher.
Good Blades: so it could mean Kingfisher from Hell?
*laughs*
Good Blades: When did the band form?
About 3 years ago, Tim and me (Cronk) started it and there's been line up changes over the years but it's stayed like this for the past year and half or so
Good Blades: Your site says a new singer is needed, what's that about?
Pedro: Basically I had some … immigration problems, and I'm either going to have to leave England or get a 9-5 in London which wont leave anytime for the band, I really want to stay but I've got to go really. Unless we can get big before then!
Good Blades: Are you more interested in the producing side or performing live?
Bit of both, we really enjoyed our last recording session with a guy called Rob Audrey, he works with a lot of new prog stuff, he doesn't really like it, hmm I probably shouldn't say that but yeah he's really good.
Pedro – I also really really like the writing progress, but were mainly a live band and love feeding off that.
We like to hand over the production side of it so we can concentrate on what were doing.
Good Blades: Plans for a tour?
We've started looking at some yeah, were looking at doing a sort of uni tour, and we've just got a van. We've started doing a bit with Limehouse Lizzy who are really cool and have a following, but we'd like to support a non-tribute act.
Good Blades: Who have you been influenced by?
Pedro - I think it starts with Chris Cronk's love for metal bands
Cronk – I don't think it does
Pedro – OK it's influenced by lots of things, you know classic rock and the like
Cronk – and I love shit Ibiza tunes
Good Blades: How would you describe yourselves?
Were just a bunch of lads that want to have a laugh.
Good Blades: Lastly, why should people check you out?
Because were having a good time, and if you don't you might be missing out on something big, its happy listening, people go away happy, it's different to modern stuff at the moment. Everybody goes away happy and enjoys it, and we give out free hugs!
Good Blades: That's a shit hot campaign! Well all the best lads and have a good one tonight.
Their live performance was tight, a rhythm section that has skills well beyond their years with two great guitarists sharing the lead role and pulling it off in style. Pedro is a great performer and worked up the crowd it's a shame he will be leaving the band but he will make a good solo artist, this band won't falter either as soon as they have a new vocalist they'll be back gigging. Hellcyon are a bunch of lads that want to have fun and make great music, and they do just that. |
