Victory Pill

Will you take the Victory Pill? By Lloyd Brown

At Southampton’s legendary Joiners, I was to meet electro-rock band Victory Pill, these Essex lads had just released their album in America as well as the UK and right from the sound check I was getting excited.

‘The Album has been honed by us … it’s not like anything out there at the moment and we think that’s great’ - VP. In the dingy cellar of the Joiners, Victory Pill told me about their sound, their plans for a tour and why you should listen to their music.

It’s clear from the moment I walk in that these guys have been in the music industry in some way or another for a while, despite only being together for a year, most of them have worked in other bands together or knew each other in the industry. We sat down in the cellar of the Joiners for the interview, a place covered in graffiti from bands throughout its history, even the sodden and torn sofas and ancient chairs have been covered, you could spend all day just reading the history of that place on those walls. The band looked suited to this environment, they aren’t fresh faced kiddies, no, they’re a tight knit bunch of guys who know what their doing and what they want to do and that’s certainly not to follow in the trend. Their album puts this across well with songs like ‘Another Clone’ and ‘The Punch’ with ‘Worst case scenario’ proving a great live song. The band had done a number of small low key gigs whilst working on the album to see what works live and what doesn’t a genius idea that is paying dividends.

The lads of Victory Pill told me how they felt humbled to be playing in the Joiners, its certainly had some great bands through its doors through the years and tonight looks like it an add another future great to its roster, for this band the only thing letting them down is the current trend in music. I was pleased to hear that they stood alongside those (including myself) apposed to big labels, they loved the freedom they had, that’s not to say that they wouldn’t mind the money but you could tell the music meant more to them.

Myself on a tour I was keen to ask them about their plans for one, a grin spread across their faces ‘we plan to do one of Australia’. Quite what inspired this they didn’t divulge but my guess is sunshine and beautiful ozzie women!

As for their live performance, well thumping bass, and finally a band that gets that electro-rock sound right, it wasn’t wank pop and it wasn’t a mess of feedback with an over zealous drummer, no this was clean cut yet dirty as you like. I got a hint of Audioslave which I’m sure these fellas would accept as a compliment and was very impressed how they recreated the sound of their album live.

Why should you listen to their music, because it’s different, and fucking good.
