VOLTCASE MYECLECTICMIND INTERVIEW:
Hello there, and welcome to the almighty Voltcase! Congratulations on being our first featured artists of 2008, how are things (EDIT: This is actually our second art feature of the year, but the interview was conducted earlier)?
Hello Almighty Voltcase!!! Things are well here in New York. I am so happy to be your first Featured artist interview of the 2008 year. WOOOWHOOO running in circles!!
How would you describe yourself to a stranger in just three words:
Eclectic, Creative, Superstitious
So, this artwork you do - there's a strong Gothic / Halloween style theme running through all your artwork that we've see here at Voltcase, is that primarily what you focus on?
Yes my artwork is mostly Halloween/gothic style art. I do step outside the Halloween Gothic style every now and then. Whatever pops into my mind I usually have to get it out and create it or else I will go insane. I also create dark yet colorful Folk Art and Primitive landscape paintings. But spooky creepy Halloween has always been my favorite theme to create ;)
There's also a lot of Tim Burton style imagery going on as well. Coincidence, or are you a big fan?
Tim Burton is a very talented man I am a very big fan of his work. Some of my work gets compared to his work a lot I do not mind I take it as a compliment. Being we both love Halloween and fit the dark art theme. Although my surroundings such as family friends and music take a very big part in my creations mix them up with spooky thoughts and poof! :)
According to your profile, its not just artwork but sculpting and jewelry as well. Can you give us a run-down of all the different stuff that you do?
Sometimes what I imagine cannot always be created on a flat canvas or wood board! So sometimes I get into sculpting little creatures out of air dry paper clay, I have these creations spread throughout my house. I also create and sell them from time to time. I also might find an old or new very plain piece of furniture and want to spook it up a bit. Such as an old cupboard or old frames that I would make into clocks. Add images of witches, black cats and bats. Simple patterns of polka dots and striped borders and a variety of halloween themed colors goes a long way. I also work with pine wood and make my own designs such as shelves and clocks paint them up for a one of a kind creepy creation. I create/paint halloween images on tiny 1" canvas paper pieces put them into a small metal frame add glass beads some leather cord or chain and your wearing your halloween art around your neck. So much comes to mind I can go on and on hehe.
Despite being spooky and Halloween based, your artwork is still very family friendly and could appeal to all ages. Any plans on doing anything more horror or adult based, or are you happy with things as they are now?
I will always make Halloween art that everyone of all ages can enjoy. Although I do have a dark side to my imagination and that does come out at times. I do have horror themed pieces that I will be showing this year you might be very surprised. I enjoy creating them as it eases my mind to get those demon like creatures out of my head. Who knows where it will go from there. :)
Do you go to many exhibitions or conventions with your artwork, and if so, do you enjoy them or are they a necessary evil to promote you work?
September 2007 was a starting point in promoting myself and my artwork to the world. I am fairly new to the gallery and convention scene. I have been doing smaller juried art shows for sometime now then decided to go for the bigger and better ones that could help expose my creations. My first big exhibit was The Halloween Art Exhibit in Chicago IL at the Mars Gallery this last October. It was a huge hit and I will be attending for many years to come. my artwork can be seen on The Halloween Art Exhibit website along with many other fine dark artists. As for conventions my art work will be shown at the HorrorFind Weekend in Maryland March 28th-30th 2008. My very first Horror convention. I am very excited as many dark art collectors come to these conventions to purchase dark art and well just to see freaky spooky people. I will be selling much darker pieces then what you usually view of my creations. I can't wait I am very excited!
Loud rock n roll plays a big part in our lives here at Voltcase towers, does music influence you at all? Any artists in particular that you fancy namedropping?
I love all music but mostly metal and classical. Metal of all kinds my favorites are Judas Priest, Tool, Metal Church, My dying bride, Black Label society. I also love Pink Floyd, the Doors and The Clash. Classical strings are a very big part of my creations as the sounds inspire me to create a light hearted yet dark theme. Bugs and animals take on human rolls and play a big part in my paintings. This is what I hear in the music then bring the characters to life on canvas. I listen to Saint-Saens Organ Symphony on a daily basis. Music inspires me to create every day.
Why should the lazy general public make the effort to check you out, and what are your plans for the future?
The public should know myself and other Halloween artists of this genre mostly create one of a kind art pieces. We may make limited prints of our work at times but imagine owning art that no one else has in the world. A one of a kind art piece sitting in your home that you actually enjoy just for you. If you love Halloween and like many different styles of Halloween art I create all styles of Halloween that you may like. One of a kind pieces will grow in value as these pieces are not mass produced and are very hard to find in stores. This is what the public should be looking for then the posters that everyone else has hanging on their walls. I plan on showing at many other Galleries in the future it opens a new door meeting great dark art collectors and creating new friendships with other artists alike.
And finally..... what does the word 'Voltcase' mean to you?
Heavy metal underground hard heads searching for a new and better way of life the norm is not it anymore! Through Music, art and a somewhat twisted lifestyle Voltcase brings the new way to you.
