Pippa RogersReviewed: Pippa Rogers "Self Titled" (CD)The best thing about this CD is the fact that its not crap. In fact, its pretty good. I know you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, but on first impressions the Pippa Rogers CD looks like a wierd mix of Britney Spears posed photography and Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollox' style illuminous pink slanty lettering.
Pippa, however, sounds nothing like Ms. Spears or Mr. Lydon.
The credits are a bit vague, but on the assumption that Pippa actually plays and writes everything on the CD, in summary it would be - excellent voice, excellent lyrics, excellent songs. This is made all the more impressive by the fact that its all home recorded material.
Pippa has that immediate Cerys Mathews 'guess where I come from' accent about her, but it isnt played upon (OK, milked) as much as Cerys, just a little here and there. And unlike Cerys, Pippa has a CD of good quality songs to back it up with. There is also a nice mix (although maybe the order of the tracks should be changed slighlty) of acoustic and full band songs, which stops it getting too samey.
Yeah, I know, kind words for a site like this, but dont worry, it isnt all praise.
The full band tracks really should be the stand out tracks, but never actually kick-in like they threaten to. For example, the track "Tired" has a verse which builds up into what should be an epic chorus at volume 11, but then only really hits volume 6. Nice all the same, but leaves a feeling of what could have been.
On the whole, an impressive advert for Pippa's solo career, and what I would imagine is an amazing live show. Who knows, maybe we'll have a chance to review her for the live section as well soon!
