PsychochargerReviewed: "Curse of the Psycho"New York's Psychocharger serve up a slab of pure hell-infused rawk and roll with their latest offering, "Curse of the Psycho".
A cross between modern day psychobilly and the industrial bands of the 90's, with a hint of goth, metal, surf and good old fashioned rock thrown in for good measure, psychocharger sound like a f*cked up Sisters of Mercy covering Misfits and Ministry songs.
However, the psychobilly tag here applies more to the themes and ideas in the songs, rather than the songs themselves. This isn't speed induced 'punk', as it were, but more of a crawling through sand on bloodied knees kind of a vibe, a bit like Rob Zombie's doomier stuff. In fact, the overall tempo and beat of the tracks are very reminiscent of the (aforementioned) Sisters of Mercy, but with a bit more foot tapping and devil-horn hand gestures involved (and without all that pretentious whining, too!).
The growling distorted vocals and lyrics perfectly capture the atmosphere of some long forgotten low budget horror film, and, coupled with the blood dripping guitar riffs, form a horror-rock tour de force of seismic proportions.
And anyway, at the end of the day, any band with song titles like 'Redneck Zombies' have to be amazing, don't they???
Finally, music aside, this albums deserves to be bought for the packaging and artwork alone, with an inner sleeve that perfectly replicates the style of the great EC comics of old. Go forth and buy!
